Fanie Viljoen Biography

Fanie Viljoen was born in 1970 and attended school in Welkom (South Africa). He matriculated in 1987 from Goudveld High School, and following that, he completed two years national service in the SA National Defence Force at Kimberley, Oshivello and Lohatlha. He started working full-time for the insurance company Sanlam in 1990. During this period he studied graphic design part-time. He obtained an N6-certificate in 1995 from Welkom College. In 2002 he completed a BA degree in Social Sciences from the University of South Africa (Unisa). 

He took interest an in art and writing during his early years at school. In 1987 he won a prize in the Bloemfontein Writing Association’s annual writing competition. He also had art as a subject at school.

Fanie participated in numerous art exhibitions in Welkom, Bloemfontein and Cape Town. Some of his paintings have found homes in the United States, Australia, Canada and Great Britain.

Fanie’s first short story was published in the woman’s magazine Sarie in 1999. Numerous publications followed in magazines and books. Today Fanie is one of South Africa’s well-known children’s authors and his writing has won multiple awards. He enjoys writing for children and young adults as he feels that he is still a child at heart. There are no boundaries when it comes to children’s imagination. Because he is a constant dreamer, this is a world he feels comfortable exploring.

Fanie is currently living in Bloemfontein (South Africa). He is a full time artist and writer.
